Inspired by renewed interest of Congress in TANF modernization, in 2015 NASTA and APHSA's Center for Employment & Economic Well-Being began a special work group made up of state and local TANF administrators, leaders of related programs, policy analysts, non-profit organizations, and others. The work group focuses on progressing a comprehensive agenda for TANF reform and reauthorization.
The work group contributed greatly to APHSA's recommendations to the House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means in July 2015 and March 2016. Those recommendations can be found under the Actions section of NASTA's website.
In November 2016, the group released a policy brief, "TANF at 20: Time for Rational Changes"
The brief contains suggested legislative, regulatory and administrative recommendations for improving TANF to be more client- and family-centric and to align TANF more productively with elements of other workforce programs.
The work group will continue to meet throughout 2017. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Kerry Desjardins at firstname.lastname@example.org.
