Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellow

Joel Anderson is a 27th Class Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellow with the Congressional Hunger Center in Washington, D.C. The fellowship program equips future leaders with experience in both local and national policy work focused on addressing hunger and poverty. While fulfilling his policy placement at APHSA, Joel will work closely with the American Association of SNAP Directors (AASD) Affinity Group and associated work groups to improve interoperability between nutrition programs at the state agency level.

Before coming to APHSA, Joel worked at the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative in Fayetteville, AR, where he researched the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tribal food systems. While in college, he helped resettle refugee families and individuals seeking asylum as an intern with World Relief Seattle, advocated for anti-poverty and anti-hunger programs as a RESULTS Organizing and Advocacy Fellow, and served as a legislative intern in the Washington, D.C., office of Rep. Derek Kilmer (WA-06).

Joel is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and holds a degree in anthropology with a concentration in global health and environment.
