Professional Development Opportunities
This year we are offering two professional development workshop opportunities as optional add-ons during your registration process. Each workshop is three hours long and can be added an additional $300 for APHSA Members and $350 for non-members. Workshop details are available below.
NOTE: If you have already registered and wish to add on a workshop, please reach out to our Conference Team.
Workshop #1: Leading with Emotional Intelligence in Human Services
Leadership in human services is deeply relational. Leaders are asked to support staff through high-stress situations, navigate complex client needs, manage change, and model resilience—all while maintaining accountability and trust. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a critical leadership skill that enables leaders to lead with clarity, empathy, and effectiveness in these environments.
This interactive workshop explores how Emotional Intelligence strengthens leadership capacity in human services agencies. Participants will learn how self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and relationship management directly impact decision-making, communication, team morale, and service outcomes. Through reflection, realistic leadership challenges, and practical tools, leaders will examine how their emotional responses influence others—and how to intentionally use EQ to lead more effectively.
Time: 3 hours
Learning Objectives – by the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the core components of emotional intelligence and their relevance to human services leadership
- Increase self-awareness around emotional triggers, stress responses, and leadership behaviors
- Utilize Emotional Intelligence to navigate difficult conversations, conflict, and organizational change
Workshop #2: Adaptive Leadership in Action: Navigating HR1 and Emerging Challenges in Human Services
Human services leaders are operating in an environment defined by rapid change, workforce disruption, evolving service delivery models, and increasing expectations for accountability and innovation. HR1 and related human services modernization efforts are not simply technical initiatives—they require adaptive leadership to address deeply rooted norms, competing values, and system-wide change.
This workshop builds on foundational leadership knowledge and introduces adaptive leadership as a practical framework for addressing the most complex and persistent challenges facing human services agencies today. Participants will explore the distinction between technical and adaptive challenges and examine why traditional leadership approaches often fall short when navigating HR1 implementation, workforce shortages, culture change, and cross-agency collaboration.
Participants will leave with concrete strategies to apply adaptive leadership principles within their own organizational contexts, strengthening their ability to lead through uncertainty, mobilizing people around tough challenges, and sustaining meaningful change.
Time: 3 hours
Learning Objectives – by the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish between technical and adaptive challenges within HR1 and broader human services initiatives
- Apply adaptive leadership principles to complex workforce and organizational change efforts
- Utilize adaptive tools to engage stakeholders, surface difficult issues, and support learning
